Q. Why did Samsung decide to create the Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition?

The idea first came about when we noticed a trend of personalization emerging in all aspects of the company. From luxury goods to everyday sneakers, we’ve noticed that consumers are looking for products that they can tailor to their tastes and style. More than ever, consumers want to be able to express their individuality. With that in mind, we felt the time had come for a device that users could truly make their own.

Over the past year, Samsung Galaxy has made a commitment to be open – a commitment to creating technologies that help our users remove the boundaries in their lives. We believe that technology should reflect the individuality of each customer, especially the mobile devices that users spend the most time with. We wanted to create a device designed, inside and out, to allow users to express themselves.

The Galaxy Z Flip3 was the perfect fit, as users were already connecting to the Galaxy Z Flip series in creative ways. Since the launch of the first edition, we’ve seen an increase in custom cases, device skins, and accessories. We saw this desire for personalization and took it a step further with the bespoke edition.

The Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition is driven by the idea of ​​“Celebrating Escape”.

Due to the difficulties of the pandemic, online exhibitions, performances and festivals have become the only outlet available for people to escape their daily frustrations. In these difficult times, we wanted to offer our customers a unique mobile experience, an experience that allows them to escape the uncertainty of our world by giving them a chance to shine and express themselves. Custom editing breaks industry standards as operations are typically designed to handle mass production rather than personalization. In this case, we wanted to move away from the proven colors that dominate smartphones and look at hues that stand out.

Q. Did you think of a particular user when designing the Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition?

The Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition is designed to appeal to more than one type of person. In fact, every Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition is made to order, designed by you to match your unique tastes. We didn’t have a specific user in mind. On the contrary, we have embraced the unique and multidimensional lives of our consumers by providing them with a personalized mobile experience.

Each of us belongs to different groups and identities, and we move between them in a fluid way. This is especially true of the younger generations, who recognize that it is natural to belong to these different groups. They want brands that accept a wide range of experiences and preferences.

We wanted to create a device that reflects this reality and allows users to express their identity in a way that feels authentic to them.

Q. How did you select the colors for the Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition?

The color selection process took place in three phases: definition of the color concept, color selection and post-launch review.

In the first phase, we worked with various teams at Samsung, as well as global color experts and trend specialists, to gather information on consumer preferences and global trends in material finishing. color (CMF). After this extensive research, we developed an overall color concept for the bespoke edition and named it “Celebrating Escape”. Celebrating escape means breaking with industry standards. We, as the design team, wanted our customers to truly enjoy this out-of-the-box experience and seek uniqueness through bright and expressive colors.

In the next phase, we established a color pool based on our research, which we ultimately narrowed down to the final selection. At first we had a wide range of colors to choose from, so we started the long process of shrinking our pool. To finalize five color options for the bespoke edition, we did a lot of internal surveys. We paid special attention to our Generation Y and Generation Z employees. In one case, for example, our management was not convinced by the yellow color option because it was not something. common in the mobile industry. But the results of our internal survey showed a strong affinity for yellow among Millennials and Gen Z employees, so we included it in our last five color options.

The final step in our color development process is a post-launch review and validation. We’re now at this stage for the Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition, looking at customer feedback and sales results. The data collected from this research and analysis will be used for future products.

Q. Why did Samsung choose only five colors for the Custom Edition?

Selecting the number of color options was a delicate process. We made our final decision considering the Choice Paradox, a popular psychological theory that states that an abundance of options requires more effort in decision-making. We didn’t want our customers to feel overwhelmed with too many color options.

As for me, our team experimented with our color pool and performed over 1,280 simulations to sort out the best colors. It was truly a difficult process, but we landed on a final selection of two frames and five color options that complement each other perfectly, regardless of the combination.

Q. How is the design of the Custom Edition different from the standard Galaxy Z Flip3?

The main differentiation of the Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition is the search for uniqueness through color. While the standard Galaxy Z Flip3 uses colors that will satisfy the majority of people and emphasizes a simple tone-on-tone composition with metal frames, the Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition is designed to help our users break the mold and to look for more unique combinations with bright and expressive colors.

Overall white on both sides with a silver frame is the most popular option. Many also choose pink for both sides with a black frame. In the United States, however, the combination of yellow and blue with a silver frame is currently the most popular choice. We love to see which variations become more popular in different regions and how consumers are drawn to different combinations. This reinforces the reason why we offer the bespoke edition in the first place.
