Manolo Blahnik’s Birkenstock collaboration unites the extravagant with the everyday

Footwear legend Manolo Blahnik has teamed up with Birkenstock for a collaborative collection of day-to-night styles – complete with his signature shine

Manolo Blahnik is perhaps most associated with his dramatic stilettos, but this spring the brand is releasing something a little more casual. Uniting the extravagant with the everyday, the ostentatious with the ergonomic, the shoe lover has teamed up with Birkenstock on a collection of day-to-evening styles, accented with its signature shine.

Mr. Blahnik himself has been a longtime fan of the German label’s signature slip-on styles, noting that you’ll find him in a pair almost every day. He was even photographed for Birkenstock’s Spring/Summer 2020 campaign, alongside the company’s CEO, Kristina Blahnik, sporting her black Boston clog. “The shoes are extremely well-crafted and timeless, two essential elements in my own designs and that’s why this collaboration worked so well,” he says.

For the collection, Blahnik covered Birkenstock’s Arizona and Boston sandals in idiosyncratic jewel-colored velvet and sparkling crystal buckles, mirroring those found on her signature stiletto heels (perhaps most memorably, on the pair Carrie Bradshaw wears in the first Sex and the City movie instead of an engagement ring). “I also added elegant French piping around the edges, which finishes the styles beautifully,” he says. The styles have a versatility that resonates with the demands of ease of dressing today. “You could wear this collection with casual pants or a ball gown – both would be wonderful,” Blahnik adds. ‘It has been a privilege to reinvent Birkenstocks in my own way, and they have been made so well in their factory. Divine!’

The limited-edition collaboration will feature seven different shoe styles, with first arrivals available from March 24 on the Manolo Blahnik and Birkenstock websites, including blue velvet iterations from Arizona and Boston, as well as versions in fuchsia velvet and black leather. Other arrivals from the collection – which have yet to be revealed – will arrive later this year in June 2022. §
