A Northampton University graduate has starred in the world’s first real-time Instagram reality show.
Manchester fashion designer Maisie Thompson was snapped up by the producers of Channel 4’s You Do You show, which followed the lives of young creatives in the city.
The footwear and accessories graduate was featured in the four-part series on social media as she set about designing and making an outfit for singer China-Lilly to wear in a music video.
The 23-year-old has also been commissioned to produce a poster and merchandise for a concert.
Maisie, a 2020 Northampton graduate, said: “I have enjoyed the experience immensely and have always wanted to work in television and alongside other young creatives, so having the opportunity to do both has been great. a really exciting experience for me.
“The filming process involved many interviews regarding the creative process, personal background, and how we responded to the tasks at hand.”
Maisie was recommended to Channel 4 by You Do You co-star and rapper Sindysman, who had been impressed with her music video and logo work.
Her appearance on the show led Maisie to take on more media appearances — and a new job.
She added: “I’ve had several radio appearances on shows such as BBC Radio Manchester, BBC4, BBC Woman’s Hour and Unity Radio.
“Initially I was talking about my experience on the show, but since then I’ve been involved in broader social conversations about Gen Z, social pressures and our future as young people in this country.
“I’ve also had many opportunities to collaborate with other creatives, as well as commissioned work.
“It gave me the opportunity to become the creative director of independent studio collective, AV Angels, which is an extremely exciting prospect for me.”
Between graduation and her Instagram fame, Maisie had created her brand 6ft Above, which sees her making and selling clothing, accessories, prints and gift sets.
She said, “I have a lot of support from my family, which has allowed me to focus full-time on the brand while taking flight.
“The next step for me is to continue to open up to new experiences and relationships with other creators.
“I haven’t found my bestseller yet, but with the constant support of my friends, family and community, I have all the facilities to get to this place in due time.”
