NCPR Holiday Special Programming Begins Saturday 12/18

We wish you happy holidays, a joyful new year and good listening. Here’s what’s coming for holiday specials on NCPR:

Saturday 12/18

1 p.m. – 3 p.m.: The Metropolitan Opera – The magic flute

The Met’s abridged English version of Mozart’s magical fairy tale is a classic holiday treat for audiences of all ages.

3 p.m. – 4 p.m.: Welcome Christmas with VocalEssence

A Christmas favorite from VocalEssence, one of the world’s premier choral groups. An hour of traditional songs and new discoveries.

4 p.m. – 5 p.m.: A Chanticleer Christmas

A unique one-hour program of holiday music is presented in concert by Chanticleer. Find out why this superb 12-piece ensemble is known as “an orchestra of voices” as they perform holiday classics and new favorites.

Monday 12/20

3 p.m. – 5 p.m.: The Dean’s List Holiday special

8 p.m. – 9 p.m.: A Slavic Christmas with the Pink Ensemble

Slavic Wonders is a superb celebration of the season featuring some truly brilliant gems from the libraries and monasteries of Krakow, Prague and Moscow.

9 p.m. – 10 p.m.: Christmas with Madrigalia 2021

Rochester, NY chamber choir Madrigalia returns to public radio for Christmas with Madrigalia 2021, an encore holiday concert that celebrates the excitement and joy of the holiday season.

tuesday 12/21

3 p.m. – 5 p.m.: Trail mix Holiday special

8 p.m. – 10 p.m.: The Christmas Festivities: In Celebration of the Winter Solstice 2021

A musical celebration of the winter holidays – Christmas, Solstice, Chanukah, New Years, Jonkonnu and Twelfth Night/Epiphany – with traditional Christmas carols, carols, wassails, hymns, children’s play songs and folk dance tunes from Live Christmas Revels stage productions performed nationwide.

3-5 p.m.: Radio Bob’s So-Called Holiday Special

8 p.m. – 9 p.m.: Crane Candlelight 2021

A selection of seasonal music from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam.

9:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.: Sound Opinions Holiday Show

Sound Opinions hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot welcome their crate-digging Kris Kringle, Andy Cirzan, to share some great holiday tunes that aren’t being played.

3 p.m. – 5 p.m. String fever Holiday Happy Hour with special guest Danny Gotham

8:00 – 9:00 p.m.: Songs of Joy and Peace: The Yo-Yo Ma Holiday Party

Celebrate the holidays with Yo-Yo Ma and her friends.

9 p.m. – 10 p.m.: A moving Christmas

Julie Amacher and Tesfa Wondemagegnehu host this uplifting Christmas special that features black music and composers.

Friday 12/24

10 a.m. – 12 p.m.: A festival of nine lessons and songs from Cambridge, England (live)

Michael Barone presents this live spoken word and music service broadcast from King’s College Chapel in Cambridge, England. The 30-voice King’s College Choir performs the legendary Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols service of Bible readings and music.

12 p.m. – 1 p.m.: A Handel & Haydn Society Christmas

Celebrate the season with this one-hour special featuring Christmas choral music from America’s oldest continuously performing ensemble, the Handel & Haydn Society of Boston.

1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.: NPR’s Tinsel Tales

Stories from the NPR Archive that touch on the meaning of Christmas. David Sedaris, Bailey White, John Henry Faulk – these and other NPR voices, past and present, tell stories from the season.

2 p.m. – 3 p.m.: Festivo AltLatino with Gaby Moreno and her friends

NPR Music’s Alt.Latino presents a holiday encore featuring singer/songwriter Gaby Moreno and her band performing tracks from her popular holiday album Posada – recorded live in 2015 at KUT Studios in Austin, TX .

3 p.m. – 5 p.m.: The authority of rhythm Holiday special

7:00 – 8:00 p.m.: Jazz Night in America: A 2021 Holiday Celebration

This program features new arrangements of holiday classics and entertaining tales recorded live from the Rose Theater in New York. Hosts of Christian McBride.

8 p.m. – 9 p.m.: Blue Afro Christmas

A very special holiday concert with Howard University’s premier vocal ensemble Afro Blue. the a cappella The group performs a variety of holiday songs, including African American spirituals, jazz and pop tunes, and classical repertoire.

Saturday 25/12

7:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. Christmas music hosted by Barb Heller

10 a.m. – 11 a.m. The Canadian Brass: Christmas is here

Hosted by WQXR’s Jeff Spurgeon, this program features arrangements of music by Vince Guaraldi and Luther Henderson along with traditional favorites.

11 a.m. – 12 p.m.: A Christmas carol with Jonathan Winters

A public radio tradition hosted by NPR’s Susan Stamberg. Master comedian Jonathan Winters presents a distinctive take on Dickens’ holiday classic, with a special edition curated by Dickens for his own presentations.

12 p.m. – 1 p.m. A Mexican Baroque Christmas with the Pink Ensemble

This holiday program features more than two centuries of festive Christmas carols and dances from the great cathedrals of Puebla and Mexico City.

1pm – 3pm The Metropolitan Opera – Aida at the Met

Highlights of Verdi’s Great Met Shows Aida to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Met broadcasts and the 150th anniversary of Aida.

3 p.m. – 5 p.m. St. Olaf’s Christmas Festival 2021

A service in song and lyrics, the Festival includes hymns, chants, choral works, as well as orchestral selections celebrating the Nativity and featuring more than 500 student musicians in five choirs and the St. Olaf Orchestra.

6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. World Cafe holiday special

World Cafe celebrates 30 years by offering a full hour of hip vacation joy. Host Raina Douris will revisit special holiday performances from Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Los Lobos, Andrew Bird, The Bird and The Bee, Pink Martini, Preservation Hall Jazz Band and more.

7 p.m. – 8 p.m. A Jazz Piano Christmas

The Kennedy Center and NPR in attendance A Jazz Piano Christmas. This year, Kennedy Center favorite George Cables, Latin star Rebeca Mauleón, Mark G. Meadows and Hancock Institute International Piano Competition finalist Joshua White.
