The annual Innovation + Design competition uses furniture experts as judges

The 2022 Innovation + Design competition will culminate with the announcement of the winners at the “Meet the Designers” awards ceremony to be held at 401 W. English on the Congdon Yards campus in High Point on Thursday, September 22 at 7 p.m. h.

HIGH POINT –The International Society of Furniture Designers convened a panel of qualified professionals to review and evaluate the 2022 Innovation + Design Competitive Manufacturer/Designer entries. This furniture industry-sponsored competition is designed to recognize professional designers who manufacture their own product and the next generation of carpentry students planning a career in the custom woodworking and related home furnishing industries.

“We would like to thank and acknowledge this year’s esteemed jury for using their industry expertise to review the Innovation + Design 2022 entries to select our finalists and winners,” said John Conrad, Executive Director of the ‘ISFD. “Our knowledgeable judges offer a combined experience of over 210 years in the home furnishing industry, spanning upholstery and furniture design, interior design, engineering, product development and product manufacturing. .

“That said, upon being selected as finalists and winners, designers and students will know that their outstanding work has been evaluated and considered the best in that category.”

The 2022 Innovation + Design judges are:

Dale Green

Dale Green is the owner of Illusion Unlimited, providing contract services to all aspects of the furniture industry for 35 years. He works with designers on new product design, engineering and the creation of special finishes in residential and hospitality areas.

Dr. Bryle Henderson Hatch

Dr. Bryle Henderson Hatch

The Executive Director of the Minority Entrepreneurship Initiative, Dr. Bryle Henderson Hatch, brings his perspective as a business owner and interior designer. It also promotes educational events within the furniture industry.

Karla Jones

Karla Jones

Karla Jones draws on her more than 22 years as an interior designer as well as the knowledge gained as executive director of the Bienenstock furniture library.

lewis mabon

lewis mabon

With over 39 years of experience, lewis mabon is a master upholsterer with extensive knowledge of woodworking who often builds what he designs. He has also designed and manufactured furniture for the residential, contract, healthcare and hospitality sectors.

Laura Niece

Laura Niece

Laura Niece is an accomplished designer who has had the honor of receiving multiple ISFD Pinnacle Awards throughout her career. She is a senior furniture designer at Otto & Moore and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Furniture Design from Kendall College of Art and Design.

Walt Ruffier

Walt Ruffier

Walt Ruffier is the executive director of The Generator at Congdon Yards. His career as a product launch engineer and then as a manufacturing engineer has enabled him to acquire solid experience in all phases of metalworking, including sheet metal work.

Taylor West

Taylor West

Taylor West graduated from Kendall College of Art and Design and is now a partner in High Point-based West Design Group. With a solid background in carpentry and design, he appreciates the skills necessary to create, manufacture and finish a unique work of art.

The Innovation + Design competition will conclude with the announcement of the winners at the “Meet the Designers” awards ceremony to be held at 401 W. English on the Congdon Yards campus in High Point on September 22 at 7 p.m. . After the celebration, the winners’ and runners-up projects will be on display Thursdays and Fridays from 3-7 p.m. and Saturdays from 12-7 p.m. at 401 W. English through October 26.

On October 22, from 3-6 p.m., ISFD will host a reception where industry executives, designers and marketers will be on hand to review the finalists’ projects for potential production opportunities. All are welcome.

As an added benefit, this year’s finalists will be interviewed for the international podcast, Design Between the Lines, and winners will be featured in industry publications. Category winners will also receive cash prizes ranging from $250 to $1,000. Best of Show winners will receive Congdon Yards Generator gift cards to work on any project of their choice.

“Additionally, finalist projects will be uniquely photographed by more than 25 local photographers participating in the Innovation + Design photography competition and voted on by visitors to the exhibition. These People’s Choice Photography winners will be announced at a live celebration co-hosted with Theater Art Galleries (TAG) on October 13 from 5-7 p.m. also at 401 W. English,” Conrad concluded.
